A few months ago while we were in Provo, we thought we were going into a wood turning store and instead it was a wood carving store - the wood turning store was next door. After looking at some of the wood carvings I got a bug that I really wanted to learn how to do it and there is a special project that I want to do for Christmas. The problem was I did not want to go to Provo to take a class. A short time later we were in Woodcrafts in Salt Lake and I asked about wood carving classes and it so happens that they have classes every month so I signed up to take a class that was yesterday. It was a caricature class and the project this month was an old fireman.
I have never done wood carving before - I have never even held the tools in my hand until yesterday.
When I arrived at the class I learned that this was probably not the best class to start in but I was already registered and I was there and the teacher (Marilyn Ure) assured me that I would be able to do it.
A couple of guys that I sat by
More of the class members (the teacher is the lady standing)
More class members
The teacher with the only other ladies in the class
There were 10 of us in the class and I was the only one who had never carved before. Most of the ones in the class belong to a club that meets weekly. I definitely felt like a fish out of water.
We started with a rough cut piece of bass wood and this is my semi-finished project - I still need to paint it.
The class started at 9:00 am and went until 4:30 pm; pizza was ordered and brought in for lunch but we basically worked throughout the whole day.
I had a great time and will probably cancel a race I was going to do in October so that I can go to a beginning carving class and learn more of the basics.
I look forward to more carving projects!
